🦸♂️ The Batman & The Holy Bible
Hello, friends!
I’ve had a bit of a rest and chill time (finally) and I’m back with some cool stuff that I hope you’ll enjoy.
📺 What to watch
Manic Street Preachers: The Story of THE HOLY BIBLE by Trash Theory
I was obsessed with Richey Edwards’ story for a while, especially after reading a novel where the author tried to place us in Richey’s head and show what COULD’VE happened to him.
Edwards was a famous British artist in the 90s, being the main lyricist for a rock band called Manic Street Preachers, although initially, he started out as their driver. After joining the band, he also pretended to be their guitarist but he couldn’t actually play any instruments, so his guitar was unplugged during their concerts while someone else played his parts behind the curtains.
Richey’s lyrics were considered some of the most unique and profound at the time. He loved classical literature while his bandmates exposed him to punk rock, probably the coolest combination you could think of. He wrote about the holocaust, politics, prostitution and anorexia, among other things. As you can imagine, not the most joyful person. He suffered from eating disorders, depression, and self-harm. He was once talking to a person that doubted the band’s credibility, and as a response, Richey carved “4 REAL” on his arm with a razor blade. So yeah..
In February 1995, on the day the band was supposed to fly out of Heathrow for their first US tour, early in the morning Richey left his hotel room in London, got in a car, and drove in an unknown direction. The car was found a couple of weeks later near a bridge in Wales. To this day nobody knows what happened. Some people assumed it was suicide but the body was never found.
👀 What to look at
a lifeline for nitehorse by iain laurie
I stared at this for a couple of minutes when I first saw it, it mesmerized me for some reason. Maybe because it’s haunting and at the same time I’m not sure what’s going on here.
Then I checked the artist’s page and realized I’d been following him for months and this was one of the first paintings he did where he completely changed his style - something visual artists don’t do enough I think, most of them stuck doing the same thing for years.
When I first followed iain laurie, he draw comic book characters too, and the goal was to make them.. uglier? If you check his page you’ll see what I’m talking about. But now he went in another direction, which is more like abstract surrealism (I don’t know anything about art) and I thought it’s great.
🎧 What to listen to
Podcast with Paul Brunson by The Diary of A CEO
I was a bit surprised that there are still matchmaking businesses in the US, but this guy Paul Brunson owns one. That made this one of the most interesting podcasts about relationships and success in general that I’ve listened to in a while.
Really liked the bit where he told how he started a YouTube channel to promote his business. For a long time, he spent a few thousand $ on each video and got like 11 viewers. Before that, he worked at investment banking and hated it, so once he started to make YouTube videos and quit his job, everyone thought he was an idiot. Luckily for him, one of those 11 viewers turned out to be Oprah Winfrey and the rest of history.
Another interesting thing he shared is how important politics have become in our romantic relationships. Just a couple of decades ago people didn’t care much about the political views of their partner but now it can make or break a couple. I’m not sure if it’s related to just US but I thought about this in the context of my own relationship and realized how true it is. My example is a bit extreme though, because I know I definitely wouldn’t get along with someone who supports the current Russian government.
💡 What to think about
“We managed to write and record nine horrible hardcore songs and send a tape to Maximum Rocknroll for review. Tim Yohannan wrote, “I can’t hear the words for shit as they’re spit out at 150 mph and subjected to the kind of recording techniquies that were probably used in the 1920s.”” NOFX: The Hepatitis Bathtub and Other Stories
